A discussion session and documentary screening were held in Cox’s Bazar to mark the sixth death anniversary of Abrar Fahad, a symbol of Bangladesh’s struggle against oppression.
The event took place on Tuesday evening at the Public Library Grounds, organized by the Cox’s Bazar District Shilpakala Academy with support from the District Administration.
The screening featured the Ministry of Cultural Affairs’ documentary “You Failed to Kill Abrar Fahad.”
Speakers at the discussion condemned the brutal murder of Abrar Fahad and urged people to unite in defense of the right to freedom of expression in the country.
The session began with remarks from District Cultural Officer Syed Ayaz Mabud, moderated by recitation artist Sanaul Haque.
He said, “The freedom of expression in this country has faced obstacles across generations. Abrar Fahad is a glaring example. He was killed for posting against Indian imperialism. Justice for this heinous act has yet to be delivered. We demand exemplary punishment for his murder.”
The discussion also saw participation from artist Aranya Sharma, Sourav Deb, General Secretary of Cox’s Bazar Udichi, theatre director Imran Hossain, and several others.
The documentary highlighted various aspects of Abrar Fahad’s life, including memories shared by his family, friends, and well-wishers, as well as his dreams and ideals. It also depicted the heart-wrenching events of the night of October 7, 2019, when Abrar was brutally beaten to death in his BUET dormitory by members of the ruling party’s student organization, Chhatra League.
Many attendees at the screening were visibly emotional, expressing concern over the delayed justice for the murder and pledging to remain united in the pursuit of truth and accountability.
