Cox’s Bazar’s weather has been unpredictable, alternating between scorching sunshine, overcast skies, and sudden rain. Despite being in the heart of summer, gusty winds and short spells of rain have given the region a monsoon-like feel.

With the end of spring and the arrival of the new Bengali year, the calendar has turned to summer. Yet, the rains continue to make brief appearances. According to Abdul Hannan, assistant meteorologist at the Cox’s Bazar Met Office, this spell of rainfall is not expected to last long.

The Meteorological Department attributes the recent showers to a seasonal low-pressure system over the southern Bay of Bengal. Thunderstorms have been reported in various parts of the country, and river ports have been advised to hoist cautionary signal number 1.

Abdul Hannan reported that the low-pressure system caused 40 millimeters of rainfall in Cox’s Bazar on Saturday. He also forecast rain between 6 PM and midnight on Sunday.

However, the meteorologist warned that the heat will intensify once the rain fades.

“By the last week of April, temperatures in Cox’s Bazar may soar up to 37°C,” he said. “And in early May, it could climb by another 1 to 2 degrees.”
