Ahead of Victory Day on December 16, people from all walks of life—men and women, young and old—are set to gather at the Cox’s Bazar Central Shaheed Minar in the early hours of the day to pay homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War.

Various government offices, political and non-political organizations, and ordinary citizens will place floral wreaths at the monument. In preparation for the national observance, the Shaheed Minar has been fully readied.

A visit to the Cox’s Bazar Central Shaheed Minar on Monday (December 15) afternoon revealed that cleaning activities were underway under the direct supervision of the District Council.

Dust, fallen leaves, and debris around the premises were being cleared, while all other preparatory works had already been completed.

Abdur Rahim, the caretaker of the Shaheed Minar, said renovation and beautification work began on December 6 under the supervision of the Cox’s Bazar District Council. “The work included thorough cleaning, drawing traditional alpana, repainting, and repairing damaged sections. The Shaheed Minar has been given a refreshed look in observance of Victory Day,” he said.

He added that all preparations were scheduled to be completed between December 14 and 15 to ensure the monument appears clean and visually appealing ahead of the national day.

Local cultural activist Mohammad Abchhar welcomed the initiative, saying, “Such renovation and maintenance work around national days brings us joy every year. It creates a festive atmosphere and helps preserve one of the city’s most important and historic landmarks. However, alongside these occasion-based efforts, the Shaheed Minar needs regular year-round maintenance.”

On December 16, people from all segments of society are expected to pay tribute at the Shaheed Minar, transforming the area into a vibrant yet solemn space of remembrance that reflects the spirit of Victory Day.
