After a 58-day fishing ban, life has returned to the Bay of Bengal—and so has the bustle at Cox’s Bazar’s iconic Fishery Ghat. While initial hauls were modest, local fishermen and traders remain hopeful that the volume of catch will increase in the coming days.

Several trawlers have already returned to shore within just a day of resuming operations, bringing with them various marine fish. The ghat, once quiet during the ban, is now alive with activity.

From early Friday morning, the scene at the Fishery Ghat was vibrant: wholesalers shouting prices, auctioneers calling bids, and buyers selecting fresh catches. Fish baskets are being offloaded from trawlers as the coastal economy springs back to life.

According to traders, fishing in the bay has resumed in full swing, with a variety of prized catches—loitta (Bombay duck), bhola, hilsa, rupchanda (pomfret), lobsters, and many more species—already making their way to local markets.

With hopes high and nets cast wide, Cox’s Bazar’s fishing community is ready for a fresh start after the seasonal pause.
