COVID-19 infections are once again on the rise across Bangladesh, including in the coastal district of Cox’s Bazar, where five new cases have been confirmed in the past week.
Data from the District Civil Surgeon’s Office shows that between June 4 and 11, testers examined a total of 31 samples, and five of those returned positive results. Among the infected individuals, three are residents while the remaining two are Rohingya refugees from the camps.
Health experts have expressed concern that without strict adherence to public health guidelines, Cox’s Bazar—home to the world’s longest sea beach and a high volume of tourists—could see a further spike in COVID-19 cases.
Dr. Mohammadul Haque, the Civil Surgeon of the district, stated that initial isolation centres have been reactivated in all nine upazila health complexes to respond quickly to any surge. Public awareness campaigns are also underway, urging people to follow the guidelines issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Salahuddin noted that mass gatherings on the beach are being discouraged, and both locals and tourists are being urged to wear masks and follow safety protocols. Awareness efforts are being strengthened to prevent a broader outbreak in the region.
