Ahsan Ullah has been awarded the Gallantry Award 2023 by Bangladesh Scouts in recognition of his extraordinary courage and selfless role in firefighting and rescue operations during the devastating Bangabazar fire in Dhaka. Only three individuals nationwide received this prestigious award this year.
The Gallantry Award is one of the highest honours of Bangladesh Scouts, bestowed upon members who demonstrate exceptional bravery, sacrifice, and a strong sense of humanitarian duty by risking their lives to save people and property.
With this achievement, Ahsan Ullah becomes the second person in Dhaka University’s history and the first individual from Cox’s Bazar district to receive the Gallantry Award. Previously, the award has been conferred on legendary scout heroes such as Shaheed Mir Mugdho, whose courage brought about a permanent change in the country’s history.
The Bangabazar fire of 2023 was one of the most catastrophic in Bangladesh. The blaze spread rapidly, triggering panic and chaos across the area. Amid such extreme danger, Ahsan Ullah ignored the risk to his life and directly joined the firefighting and rescue efforts.
Despite intense heat, thick smoke, and the constant threat of explosions, he actively assisted affected traders and participated in rescue operations. Official evaluations later highly commended his fearless and humane actions, leading to this national recognition.
Currently, Ahsan Ullah is a Master’s student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Dhaka and serves as the Research Manager of the Dhaka University Research Society (DURS). His dedication to research, social development, and humanitarian service has established him as a strong source of inspiration for many.
He has long been actively involved with Bangladesh Scouts, contributing to voluntary services, disaster management,t and youth leadership development. As a scout representative, he has participated in international scouting activities in India and successfully carried out responsibilities at an international scouting workshop in Japan in November 2024.
Ahsan Ullah hails from Eidgaon Upazila in Cox’s Bazar district. Locals believe his achievement has generated widespread inspiration and pride in the region.
Reacting to the honour, Ahsan Ullah said, “This recognition is not mine alone. It belongs to everyone who worked together that day, risking their lives, and to those who silently supported us with courage and prayers. This award makes me feel even more responsible.”
Bangladesh Scouts stated that Ahsan Ullah’s achievement stands as a powerful example for the youth. Moving forward with courage, discipline, and humanitarian values in times of crisis lies at the heart of scouting philosophy—and this Gallantry Award reflects that spirit in its truest form.
