Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, said that the presence of freshwater dolphins in rivers and water bodies is an indicator of the health of the environment.
Preventing water pollution and ensuring the natural flow of rivers and wetlands are essential to protecting dolphins.
According to a ministry press statement, the Environment Adviser made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion held at the Forest Department on the occasion of International Freshwater Dolphin Day 2024.
She also called for increased public awareness, effective implementation of government initiatives, and the involvement of local communities in dolphin conservation efforts.
At the event, the Environmental Adviser officially launched the website to digitalize the CITES Certification Process.
She also announced the results of a dolphin survey, which estimated the presence of about 636 groups or 1,352 Ganges River dolphins. A dolphin exhibition and documentary were also presented at the event.
She emphasized the need for forest officials to protect forests and wildlife with courage and speed.
