Farmer Abul Kalam has drawn attention after selling melons worth nearly Tk 60,000 in a single day while sitting on a roadside along the bus terminal road in Cox’s Bazar. The melons cultivated on his land have also received positive customer feedback.

Abul Kalam cultivated melons on about four kani of land in the Mithachhari area of Ramu upazila. While most of his produce is sold to wholesale traders directly from the field, he brings a portion to the town’s bus terminal road for retail sale.

“Today I sold melons worth around Tk 60,000. Traders usually collect from the field, but I bring the remaining ones here for retail. Sales on the roadside have been quite good,” he said.

He added that, depending on size and quality, each melon is being sold at Tk 50, Tk 100, and Tk 200. As they are freshly harvested from his land, the melons are both fresh and notably sweet in taste.

A visit to the spot showed him sitting by the roadside, holding large melons to attract buyers. Several customers were seen purchasing the fruit during the time.

Nusrat, a regular passer-by, said she often buys melons from the spot while returning home. She remarked, “The melons are incredibly delicious.”

Locals said that with rising demand for seasonal fruits, farmers are benefiting from selling directly to consumers, which is improving their financial condition.
