In the farmlands of Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya upazila, farmers are currently busy planting BRRI Dhan-108, a rice variety gaining popularity for its higher yield, fine taste, and fluffy texture, along with its long straw. Recently, paddy seedlings of this variety have been transplanted across different fields in Ukhiya.

Local farmer Alai Hossain said the demand for BRRI Dhan-108 is increasing annually, encouraging farmers to plant more of it. “The market price for this rice is also excellent, so we are planting it with high hopes,” he added.

Agriculture officials describe BRRI Dhan-108 as a high-yielding, fine-grain rice variety suitable for cultivation during the Boro season.

One of its key features is that each panicle produces a large number of grains—typically between 250 and 270—and the grains are slender and long, similar to ziran rice.

Under proper cultivation, farmers can expect yields of 7.5 to 8.5 tonnes per hectare.
