After a 22-day fishing ban, fishermen along the Cox’s Bazar coast are ready to set sail again. From early Saturday (October 26), trawlers and boats will head out to the Bay of Bengal in search of fresh catches.
As in previous years, the government imposed a nationwide ban from October 4 to 25 to protect mother hilsa during the breeding season. The restriction prohibited fishing, transportation, and sale of hilsa across all rivers and coastal waters.
During the ban, most fishermen were forced to stay ashore, leaving many families in financial distress. Now, with the ban lifted, the mood along the coastal villages has turned festive.
In Maheshkhali, Teknaf, Kutubdia, Chakaria, and Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazilas, fishermen are busy repairing trawlers, drying nets, and stocking ice for their first trips back to the sea.
“We’ve been stuck at home for 22 days. Knowing we can return to the sea tomorrow fills my heart with joy,” said local fisherman Rahim Ullah. “I’m hoping for a good catch this time.”
Officials from the Department of Fisheries stated that fishermen demonstrated commendable cooperation during the ban period. We expect the conservation efforts to enhance hilsa breeding, leading to a more abundant yield in the upcoming season.
