With the onset of the fishing season, Majhirghat in Cox’s Bazar has become a hub of activity. At the local dockyard—known among locals for trawler repair—3 to 5 trawlers are being serviced daily to prepare for their voyages into the deep sea.

Repair workers here say that this is the peak season, as trawler owners flock to ensure their vessels are seaworthy. Every detail is checked—from wooden and metal frames to engines, propellers, and leak points—to avoid mishaps while at sea.

One repair technician shared, “We earn more during this season than the rest of the year combined. Although we work more than 10 hours a day, we feel satisfied due to the steady work and good income.

Trawler owners echoed the importance of preparedness, saying that a reliable and well-maintained boat is critical for safety. Any breakdown mid-sea could be life-threatening, so they prefer to complete all necessary repairs beforehand.

The seasonal demand ensures safer fishing trips and creates vital employment opportunities for skilled laborers, making the dockyard a key player in the region’s economic and maritime ecosystem.
