Within just a few weeks, the price of green chilies has nearly doubled. On Wednesday morning, in different markets across Cox’s Bazar, green chilies were selling for Tk 200–220 per kilogram.
Traders said continuous rainfall and flooding in several regions have severely reduced chili production. In many areas, plants have been destroyed, leading to lower supply and a sharp rise in prices.
Simultaneously, the overall decline in vegetable supplies has resulted in a rise in prices. Traders explained that floods and excessive rainfall in various districts disrupted the flow of vegetables to local markets.
As a result, buyers are facing difficulties, with many purchasing only small quantities.
Vendors reported that heavy rains and flooding caused damage to large volumes of vegetables.
Once the rainfall subsides and the floodwaters recede, they expect prices to ease, allowing the supply to return to normal. However, they warned that high prices are likely to persist for at least another month.
