Today marks the first day of the monsoon season—Pahela Asharh—in the Bengali calendar. The monsoon, comprising the two months of Asharh and Shrabon, is already making its presence felt with cloudy skies and intermittent rain, signalling its grand arrival across the country.
This seasonal change brings much-needed relief from the scorching heat, offering a sense of comfort, peace, and joy to people across Bangladesh. The arrival of monsoon is a timeless muse for poets and writers, inspiring countless literary works. Rivers swell with renewed life, and trees blossom with monsoon flowers like Kadamba and Bakul, painting a vivid picture of nature’s renewal.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 72 hours starting Monday morning (10 AM). This weather system is driven by active southwest monsoon winds and is expected to affect several divisions, including Chattogram, Barisal, Khulna, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Dhaka, and Rajshahi.
Due to the intensity of the forecast, the BMD has also warned of possible landslides in the hilly regions of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati, Khagrachari, and Bandarban. Additionally, temporary waterlogging may occur in low-lying areas due to the downpour.
Abdul Hannan, Assistant Meteorologist at the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office, confirmed the forecast and advised residents to stay alert.
