A vast pond lies beside the Matamuhuri River in Chakaria Upazila of Cox’s Bazar, right next to the Matamuhuri Bridge. Stretching as far as the eye can see, the waterbody appears almost endless. Yet, surprisingly, this enormous pond has no known official name, or if it once had one, it has long since been forgotten.
Dense settlements have grown up around the pond over the years. Educational institutions, religious establishments, and other important structures now stand on its banks. According to locals, despite being a significant marker of Chakaria’s heritage, the pond has remained largely neglected.
Many residents of Chakaria are unaware of the history or importance of the waterbody. Along its perimeter are several access points where people regularly bathe and collect water for daily use.
At present, much of the pond is covered with water hyacinth, obscuring the clear water beneath. In the absence of proper conservation and maintenance, the large body of water is gradually losing its character and presence.
Chakaria-based journalist SM Hanif said the pond had never been formally named. “Because it has no recognised name and its historical significance has not been highlighted, people remain largely unaware of it. As a result, it still exists without a clear identity,” he said.
Local community members believe urgent steps are needed to name, restore, and preserve the pond, taking into account its historical and social value.
Otherwise, if not, this aspect of Chakaria’s history could eventually fade into obscurity. This piece of Chakaria’s heritage may one day slip quietly into oblivion.
