Demand for marine Guijja fish is rising along the Cox’s Bazar coast. Caught in the deep waters of the Bay of Bengal, these fish are known for their large size, often weighing between 10 and 15 kilograms or more.

While locally known as Guijja, the fish is believed to belong to the marine catfish family or a similar large fish species.

In some cases, Guijja is also processed into dried fish, particularly in the drying yards of Nazirartek and Kutubdia.

A visit to local markets shows that Guijja sells for Tk 400–600 per kilogram, fluctuating prices depending on size and season.

Known for its taste and rich nutritional value, the fish is popular among local consumers and outside buyers.

Fishermen say catching such large fish from the deep sea is never easy, but when a big Guijja is caught, it brings smiles to their faces.

On the other hand, traders believe that if supply remains steady, the market for this prized catch could grow even further.
