The salt farmers in Pekua, Cox’s Bazar, are busy rolling salt during the hot noon, marking the beginning of the peak season for salt harvesting.
Nurul Absar, a salt farmer, told Cox’s Bazar Life that the peak season has just started. Initially, the production is somewhat low, but it is expected to increase by December. He also expressed optimism about a fair price for salt.
According to Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC), commercial salt production in Cox’s Bazar started in 1960.
68,357 acres of land in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar Sadar, Pekua, Maheshkhali, Eidgaon, Chakria, Kutubdia, and Banshkhali are under salt cultivation during the current season, which spans five months from November 15 to May 15.
The previous season saw the production of 22.72 lakh metric tons of salt.
