Samon Hossain, central general secretary of the Bangladesh Sports Press Association (BSPA), has said that sports journalists play a vital role in the overall development of the country’s premier tourist destination, promoting local sports culture, and attracting both domestic and foreign tourists.
Speaking as the chief guest at an extraordinary general meeting of the BSPA Cox’s Bazar unit on Tuesday afternoon, Hossain said sports journalists are not limited to covering international football and cricket matches alone.
Their reporting on local sporting events such as beach football, surfing, and volleyball across print and electronic media has helped create a strong link between sports and tourism, making the two sectors complementary.
He expressed optimism that the Cox’s Bazar BSPA would serve as a key platform for strengthening this connection and further promoting the region’s tourism potential.
The meeting was held at the conference hall of the star-rated Hotel Long Beach along the Cox’s Bazar seafront.
It was presided over by BSPA Cox’s Bazar convener M R Mahbub and conducted by member secretary Ahsan Suman.
Highlighting the importance of diversifying tourism, the BSPA general secretary emphasised the need for joint efforts by sports organisers and journalists to contribute effectively to the growth of the tourism industry.
Senior members Iqram Chowdhury Tipu, Golam Azam Khan, M Bedarul Alam, Chaiyed Alam, Shahed Mizan, and Aziz Russell also spoke at the meeting.
BSPA members Tarekur Rahman, Mizanur Rahman, Jahangir Alam Sams, and others were present.
Praising the recent organisational activities of the Cox’s Bazar unit, Hossain urged members to work collectively to make it more dynamic and transform it into one of the country’s leading BSPA branches.
