Farmers in Cox’s Bazar have achieved remarkable success in cultivating local tomatoes. Improved farming techniques, government support, and favorable weather conditions have led to a production increase of more than double this season. The growing demand for local tomatoes in markets brings new hope to farmers.
Local tomato cultivation is thriving in Cox’s Bazar Sadar, Chakaria, Ukhiya, and Ramu upazilas. Farmers say these chemical-free tomatoes are highly sought after due to their superior taste and quality, fetching reasonable prices in the market.
Farmer Abdul Malek shared his experience: “This year, I made a good profit from growing local tomatoes. It’s a high-demand crop, so selling it is never a concern.”
Kamrul Hasan Siddiqui, the Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer (Municipality Block) at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila Agriculture Office, highlighted the growing enthusiasm among farmers, saying, “Interest in local tomato farming is increasing. We are training farmers in modern cultivation methods and encouraging the use of high-quality seeds and organic fertilizers. As a result, yields are improving, and farmers are benefiting financially.”
Although local tomatoes are priced slightly higher in Cox’s Bazar markets, consumers remain satisfied due to their rich flavor and nutritional value. The tomatoes are now being supplied to neighboring districts beyond local markets.
Agricultural experts believe that with continued government support and access to modern technology, local tomato farming in Cox’s Bazar can expand even further, significantly boosting farmers’ incomes.
