A plant for treating surface water has been inaugurated in Kutubdia to ensure the provision of safe drinking water for residents. The project was formally launched yesterday on the premises of Kailashghona Primary School in Koiarbil Union, with Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kathoai Pru Marma as the chief guest.
Highlighting the urgency of the initiative, the UNO stated that the freshwater level in Kutubdia is steadily declining and could lead to an acute drinking water crisis in the coming years. He urged local communities to take responsibility for the management and maintenance of the newly established plants to safeguard access to safe water.
Md. Farhad Mia, Sub-Assistant Engineer of the Department of Public Health Engineering, presided over the event. Md. Tarikul Islam, the Project Director of the NGO Forum for Public Health, and other officials were also in attendance.
Funded by UNICEF and implemented by the NGO Forum for Public Health, the project has established four water treatment plants in the upazila. According to officials, the plants will purify saline canal water through a seven-step advanced filtration process, converting it into safe drinking water. Each plant will allow residents to collect purified water through two different systems.
