As Valentine’s Day (February 14), Basanta Utsab (Spring Festival), and International Mother Language Day approach, flower farmers in Borotoli, Chakaria, are gearing up for high-demand sales. Known as the flower hub of Cox’s Bazar, Borotoli is witnessing a busy season, with farmers cultivating roses, gladiolus, and tuberose on 50 acres of land this year.

Despite a good harvest, farmers sell at lower prices than last year. Roses are selling at Tk 5 per piece, which is Tk 10 less than last year’s price. Similarly, Gladiolus is selling at Tk 10 per piece, which is also Tk 10 lower than before. Farmers fear significant financial losses due to the price drop, even though the demand remains strong in Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, and other parts of the country.

Besides buyers, the vibrant flower fields draw tourists and flower lovers. Many purchase flowers, while others enjoy the scenic beauty and capture photos.

Moinul Islam, president of the Borotoli Rose Farmers’ Association, stated that these three days will generate sales worth Tk 50 lakh. However, last year, sales during the same period amounted to Tk 1 crore.

Moinul believes the lack of a newly elected government has impacted flower prices, leading to lower-than-expected earnings for farmers. However, he remains hopeful that the market will recover soon.
