The traditional ‘Kalpo Jahaj Bhasha’ (ship floating) festival of the Buddhist community was celebrated with great enthusiasm on the Bakkhali River in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar.

From noon on Tuesday (October 7), both banks of the river turned festive as crowds gathered to witness the colorful event.

Nine beautifully crafted symbolic ships—known as Kalpo Jahaj—made of bamboo, cane, and colorful paper were floated on the river.

The celebration featured traditional Buddhist songs, dances, and devotional performances, creating a joyful and spiritual atmosphere.

The festival was organized to mark Probarona Purnima, one of the most sacred occasions for Buddhists. Like every year, it was arranged by the Ramu Central Probarona and Jahaj Vasa Festival Committee.

A total of nine symbolic ships built in six Buddhist villages of Ramu participated in this year’s event. The artistically decorated ships depicted figures such as Emperor Ashoka, eagles, peacocks, horses, and other symbolic creatures.

Each ship was mounted on large rafts made of several boats tied together, floating gracefully down the river.

Young boys and girls celebrated atop the ships with music, dance, and joyous chants, filling the riverside with laughter, rhythm, and devotion.
