A tree sapling distribution program was held in Pekua, Cox’s Bazar, on Sunday, calling for a green belt across the coastal region and stronger efforts to address the impacts of climate change.
The programme, titled “Tree Sapling Distribution Programme-2026”, was held at 10:00 am at the Pekua Central School and College premises.
Dhara, a citizen organisation working on environmental and climate issues, and international environmental organisation Waterkeepers Bangladesh jointly organised the programme under the slogan, “Plant trees, build a green Bangladesh and create a green belt across the coast.”
Pekua Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mohammad Anisul Islam attended the programme as the chief guest.
Pekua Central School and College headteacher Mujibul Haque Chowdhury, retired teacher Ruhul Amin, Rajakhali union president of the Salt, Fisheries and Agriculture Welfare Association Abdul Halim and Planetious Club coordinator Jihadul Islam Jihad were also present, along with teachers, students, environmental activists and residents.
A separate sapling distribution programme was held at Pekua Model Government GMC Institution on the same day.
The programme was attended by acting headteacher Maruma Didar, senior ICT teacher Jahangir Alam, teachers Abid Islam and Arindon Debnath, students and residents.
At both programmes, speakers called for increased tree planting to protect environmental balance, create a green belt in coastal areas and reduce the adverse impacts of climate change.
Saplings of different species were later distributed among students and local residents.
The organisers said coastal areas were particularly vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters.
They said planned tree planting and the development of green belts could help reduce damage from cyclones and tidal surges while also supporting biodiversity conservation and maintaining ecological balance.
