A large number of tuna are arriving at the Cox’s Bazar Fishery Ghat as fishing trawlers return from the sea following the lifting of the seasonal fishing ban, bringing renewed activity to one of the country’s busiest fish markets.

Tuna has emerged as the dominant catch recently, with trawlers unloading large quantities of the fish and traders reporting brisk wholesale and retail sales.

Fish traders said tuna is currently being sold in the wholesale market at Tk 280 to Tk 450 per kilogramme, depending on size and quality. Larger specimens command even higher prices. The fish is supplied to various districts across the country as well as to local hotels and restaurants in the coastal town.

Mohammad Selim, a trader at the fish landing centre, said fishermen had returned with a satisfactory catch of tuna after venturing back into the sea following the end of the 58-day fishing ban.

“There is always a strong market demand for tuna.” At present, several tonnes of fish are arriving at the landing centre every day,’ he said.

Abu Taher, manager of a seafood restaurant in Cox’s Bazar town, said tuna remained one of the most popular fish among tourists.

‘Visitors particularly enjoy tuna when it is served as barbecue, grilled or fried dishes. We offer several tuna-based items on our menu every day,’ he said.

People in the fisheries sector said the popularity of tuna has been steadily increasing due to its taste and nutritional value. The fish has become a regular feature on the menus of many beachside restaurants catering to tourists.

With supplies increasing after the lifting of the fishing restrictions, traders and restaurant owners have expressed satisfaction, hoping the strong catch will continue in the coming weeks.
