Betel leaf (paan) from Ukhiya, a subdistrict of Cox’s Bazar, continues to gain popularity both across Bangladesh and in select international markets. Known for its distinct aroma and quality, paan cultivated in areas like Sonarpara, Court Bazar, Morichya, Ukhiya Sadar, Balukhali, and Palongkhali is regularly sent to wholesale traders who process and distribute it to Dhaka and other major cities — and occasionally, abroad.

Local traders say that Ukhiya’s paan holds a special place in domestic markets due to its flavor and freshness. Its demand remains strong from rural households to urban ceremonies.

Agriculture officials in the region note a rising interest among farmers in betel leaf cultivation, seeing it as a profitable crop. Local businessmen believe that with proper training and support for growers, the government could unlock significant foreign exchange potential through the expanded export of high-quality betel leaves.

From rural homes to urban events, paan remains an enduring symbol of Bengali tradition and hospitality. Be it a wedding or a festive invitation — no celebration feels complete without the customary serving of a khili of paan.
