The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has reversed its earlier decision to reduce food aid for Rohingya refugees living in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char. Under the revised plan, Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar will continue to receive $12 per month in food assistance, while those in Bhasan Char will receive $13 per month.

Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), confirmed the decision today (Thursday). He stated that WFP had formally communicated the update through an official letter.

Previously, citing funding shortages, WFP had announced plans to cut the monthly food allowance from $12.50 to $6 per person starting in April 2024. The RRRC office received a letter regarding the proposed reduction on March 5.

Commenting on the latest development, Mizanur Rahman said, “Despite financial constraints, WFP has ensured that food assistance will remain unchanged. This decision will help maintain food security and nutritional standards for the Rohingya refugees.”
