Under the gentle winter sunshine, a scene of lively activity unfolds in Pechar Dwip village, located along the Marine Drive in Cox’s Bazar.
Courtyards across the town are covered with freshly harvested paddy, as homemakers spend busy hours drying rice in preparation for the season ahead. With winter comes the tradition of pitha (traditional rice cakes), and households have already begun storing paddy to meet the seasonal demand.
Local homemaker Sultana Begum (38) said winter is synonymous with pitha making. “We plan to prepare pitha at home for our family and relatives.
That’s why we are storing paddy in advance,” she said. “As long as winter lasts, we will arrange pitha at home. So we are drying the paddy properly in the sun to ensure good-quality rice.”
Conversations with villagers revealed that sun-drying paddy naturally improves rice quality and extends its shelf life. Winter’s steady sunshine makes the task easier compared to other seasons.
This familiar scene in Pechar Dwip village vividly reflects the traditions of rural life, adding warmth and charm to the joys of the winter season.
