Ramu Upazila Parishad Hall recently hosted the “Women Tourism Leaders Award, Ramu-2025,” honouring seven women from Ramu for their exceptional contributions to the tourism sector.
The Cox’s Bazar Women Chamber of Commerce organized the event on Monday in collaboration with the ILO-IJEC Project and Enroot International.
The awardees are Afrin Sultana Sumi, Faria Ahmed, Rehena Parvin, Rekha Barua, Rownok Ara Khanom, Samina Afrin, and Senuara Akter.
Speaking at the event, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Rashedul Islam said,
“Tourism in Cox’s Bazar is not just about beaches and hotels; it is deeply linked with people’s lives, culture, and livelihoods. Women’s participation is critical for ensuring tourism’s benefits reach the grassroots.”
Upazila Women Affairs Officer Umme Suraiya Amin added,
“Women are making remarkable contributions in food, handicrafts, and service sectors. They manage households while emerging entrepreneurs, making Cox’s Bazar tourism more diverse and inclusive.”
Jahanara Islam, Chairperson of Cox’s Bazar Women Chamber of Commerce, said,
“These women are our pride. They have shown that with minimal support and opportunity, women can become successful entrepreneurs in tourism and set examples for society.”
Mohammad Mustafiqul Rahman, ILO consultant, said,
“Initiatives like these increase women’s visibility and recognize their work. Women’s leadership in tourism creates employment and lays the foundation for sustainable development and an inclusive economy. ILO will always support this positive change.”
Women from Ramu Upazila have long played a key role in developing Cox’s Bazar’s tourism sector—running eco-resorts, establishing handicraft and food-based businesses, and leading tour services, wellness centers, and hospitality ventures. The event aims to recognize their contributions, inspire others, and provide role models for aspiring women entrepreneurs.
The awardees shared their journeys of struggle and success, inspiring all attendees. The program received broad appreciation locally as a significant effort to encourage women’s leadership and participation in tourism.
