Heavy rainfall that began early Sunday morning has brought long-awaited relief to the residents and tourists of Cox’s Bazar, following two weeks of relentless heat. The downpour, which started before dawn on May 18, has continued without pause, offering a much-needed break from the sweltering summer temperatures.
As of 8 a.m., the city had already received hours of continuous rainfall. While the sudden rain caused some inconvenience, such as waterlogging in the town, locals and visitors breathed a sigh of relief, welcoming the cooler air and overcast skies.
Residents and business owners reported that the heat during the past two weeks had become unbearable, especially during the daytime. “Everyone was desperately waiting for rain,” said one local trader. “Now that it’s here, the environment feels much more peaceful.”
According to the Meteorological Department, the rain is caused by southwest monsoon winds entering the region. Forecasters predict similar weather may continue over the coming days.
However, the rain has also led to waterlogging in several city areas. Overflowing drains flooded parts of the bypass road near the hotel-motel zone and areas like Bazarghata, Tekpara, and Gol Dighi.
