A three-day international conference is set to begin in Cox’s Bazar on Sunday, aiming to refocus global attention on the protracted Rohingya crisis. Representatives from the United Nations and various international organizations are expected to attend, alongside members of the Rohingya community, who will share their experiences as victims of ethnic cleansing in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

Chief Adviser of the interim government Dr. Muhammad Yunus will join the conference as the chief guest on the second day and is scheduled to take part in several sessions on its closing day as well.

Speaking at a press briefing at Dhaka’s Foreign Service Academy on Friday, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam shared details of the Cox’s Bazar conference.

“The government has planned three major international conferences to ensure the Rohingya issue remains a top priority on the global agenda,” he said. “As part of that initiative, the three-day conference in Cox’s Bazar will begin on August 24.”

According to him, the conference will focus on four key issues: Rohingya repatriation, scaling up humanitarian assistance, ensuring justice for atrocities committed against the Rohingyas, and exploring pathways toward a durable solution.

“The genocide the Rohingyas have endured is not easy to communicate directly to the international community,” Alam said. “That is why representatives from around 40 countries have been invited to Cox’s Bazar, where Rohingya themselves will share their stories of suffering.”

The press secretary added that the largest of the three planned events will be held at the United Nations in New York on September 30, with participation expected from 170 countries. Another conference is being planned for Doha, Qatar, in December.
