The cultivation of betel or areca nuts is steadily increasing in the Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar, with farmers showing growing interest in establishing new plantations across different unions and rural areas. The trend is particularly visible in Goalia, where areca nut trees are being planted on homestead lands and elevated plots.
Local farmers said betel nut cultivation requires relatively low investment, and once a plantation is established, it yields produce over a long period. With strong market demand and stable prices, many farmers are now turning to areca nut cultivation alongside traditional rice and vegetable farming.
Several farmers in Goalia noted that with regular care and proper management, the betel nut can generate a good income every year. This has helped improve household financial stability and encouraged farmers to bring more land under betel nut cultivation.
Agriculture officials at the upazila level believe that greater emphasis on modern farming methods and improved betel nut varieties could make this sector an important contributor to Ukhiya’s local economy in the future.
Moreover, the expansion of betel nut gardens is making rural areas greener, which is also having a positive impact on the environment.
