Cox’s Bazar experienced a record-breaking rainfall of 401 mm in the past 24 hours (from 6 AM yesterday to 6 AM today), according to Assistant Meteorologist Md. Abdul Hannan of Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office. This is the highest single-day rainfall recorded in the region this season.

Ninety percent of the city is submerged due to heavy rains. At least 35 side streets, including the city’s main and beach roads, have been flooded with rainwater, destroying goods in hundreds of shops.

Thousands of houses have been submerged. People are suffering due to traffic being halted on the roads. 18 roads in the hotel and motel zone near the beach have also been flooded. Thousands of tourists in more than five hundred hotels and motels are stranded.

The heavy downpour is attributed to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal. For this, the meteorological office hoisted local cautionary signal number 3 at maritime ports like Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra.

Fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay have been advised to stay close to the coast and exercise caution until further notice.
