Haystacks are a familiar sight in rural areas, standing as a testament to Bangladesh’s agricultural roots. After harvesting crops, farmers create these stacks to store hay, which serves as essential fodder for livestock and sustains them through the seasons. Beyond its agricultural utility, the haystack represents a cherished tradition of rural life.

Once, every farmer’s household in Bangladesh maintained haystacks to feed their domesticated animals, especially cattle. Back then, cattle rearing was an integral part of rural livelihoods.

Modernity has reduced the number of cattle-rearing households, but some traditional farming families that combine agriculture and livestock-rearing still display haystacks.
