After 35 years, the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) election is set to take place, and Touhidul Islam, a native of Cox’s Bazar, is contesting for the post of Research and Innovation Secretary from the Sarbojonin Shikkharthi Sangsad (All-Students Panel).
Touhid, a student of the Bangladesh Studies Department (2021-22 session), completed his SSC at the historic Baitush Sharaf School in Cox’s Bazar and his HSC at Ramu Government College.
“I have been involved in research for several years. Two of my papers on public health have already been published in international journals,” said Touhid, currently serving as a Senior Research Assistant at the Bangladesh Institute of Innovative Health Research (BIIHR).
He added that he has research experience in supply chain management and is a regular member of the R&D team for the campus environmental initiative “Amader Shobuj Campus.”
Touhid dreams of establishing an independent research institute at CU, modeled after BRAC University’s BIGD. “If elected, I will create opportunities for students to learn hands-on research methodologies—from start to finish.
With teachers’ collaboration and engaging CU’s 28,000 students, I want to increase the research volume and help our university secure a place in global rankings,” he said.
According to Touhid, the development of the research sector is key to future progress. His main goal is to build a research-oriented education system and represent students as a strong voice in CUCSU.
The Sarbojonin Shikkharthi Sangsad is an inclusive panel that brings together the Student Rights Council, the Student Majlis, visually impaired students, and other conscious and active students on campus under the slogan: “We Will Bring Change Fast.”
Students believe such a research-oriented leadership vision is a new beacon of hope for Chittagong University’s academic future.
