Meteorologist Md. Shahinul Islam from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has stated that the recent heavy rains along the Cox’s Bazar coastline are a result of the lingering effects of Cyclone Yagi. Speaking to Prothom Alo today, he explained that Cyclone Yagi had formed in the Indian Ocean about a week ago and made landfall in Vietnam, China, and Myanmar. After causing devastation in those three countries, the cyclone re-entered the ocean, gathering significant cloud mass before weakening into a low-pressure system, which eventually reached the Cox’s Bazar coast and entered Bangladesh. This has led to widespread rainfall across large parts of the country. The combined effects of the cyclone’s distant impact, strong monsoon winds, and cloud systems formed over the Bay of Bengal have resulted in record-breaking rainfall in Cox’s Bazar today.
