The long-running “Sea Safe Lifeguard” project, which has been operating for years to ensure tourist safety on Cox’s Bazar beach, is set to shut down due to funding shortages and the expiry of its project tenure.
The development has sparked fresh concerns about the safety of visitors at the country’s largest tourist destination.
In response, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism has taken a key initiative to keep lifeguard services operational.
The ministry has formally issued letters to hotel, motel, guesthouse, and resort owners in Cox’s Bazar, instructing them to finance lifeguard operations on the beach.
According to the directive, business owners will be responsible for covering the lifeguards’ salaries, allowances, training, and other expenses.
The ministry has also allowed hoteliers and resort operators to jointly manage the service collectively or through an association.
