Out at sea, a single fishing boat becomes the center of many lives, livelihoods, and dreams. One such boat owner, Syed Hossain of Mollartek, explains that building a ship costs around Tk 2–3 lakh. Each boat supports the hard work of about 15 fishermen and crew members. The harsh sea requires annual maintenance for these wooden boats. Occasionally, the pounding waves crack the hull’s bottom; at other times, unexpected accidents leave the vessel damaged.
