It is the peak season for betel leaf cultivation in the rural areas of Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.

From early morning, village women can be seen working tirelessly in the fields—trimming betel vines, fixing trellises, and arranging the green creepers with care.

Their daily labor has transformed the village fields into vibrant scenes of rural life.

Once dominated mainly by men, betel leaf farming is now witnessing active participation from women. Many cultivate their own land, while others work as laborers to support their families financially.

Local farmers say betel leaf farming offers a lucrative income, encouraging more women to get involved alongside the men.

Their contribution is not only strengthening household economies but also boosting the overall rural economy.

Lush green betel leaves now cover the trellises across many villages in Ukhiya.

These fields tell stories not just of livelihood but also of women’s hard work, self-reliance, and a deep connection with nature.

Farmers remain hopeful that with favorable weather this year, both yield and market prices for betel leaves will be reasonable.
