Even amid the monsoon rains, the betel nut market in Sonarpara, Ukhiya remains lively and bustling. While continuous downpours initially discouraged farmers, recent clear weather has seen a revival in trading activity.
Farmers report good prices for their produce this season, thanks to a bumper harvest of betel nuts. After fulfilling local demand, the surplus is being marketed to major cities like Dhaka and Chattogram, and even exported to countries in the Middle East including Saudi Arabia and Dubai, according to traders.
Sources confirm that over 7,000 families in the region depend on betel nut cultivation for their livelihood. Field officials from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) note that commercial production capacity has grown, and the current season’s strong yield has further boosted farmers’ confidence.
Despite seasonal challenges, the economic importance of betel nut farming in Ukhiya remains vital — a testament to the resilience of the local farming community and the growing demand for this cash crop both at home and abroad.
