With the theme “Let’s eat more local fruits, let’s plant more fruit trees,” a three-day National Fruit Fair has begun in Cox’s Bazar. The fair was inaugurated on Thursday (June 19) at the premises of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office on Anderson Road, organized by the DAE’s Cox’s Bazar district office.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md. Imran Hossain Sajib officially inaugurated the fair. In his speech, he said, “Fruits are not only delicious but also a vital source of essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and dietary fiber. Regular consumption of seasonal local fruits boosts immunity. Therefore, planting fruit trees in home gardens, rooftops, and other available spaces should be encouraged.”
The inaugural event was presided over by Dr. Bimal Kumar Pramanik, Deputy Director of the DAE, while Md. Lokman Hakim from the Agricultural Information Service conducted the program.
Other speakers included Jahid Hasan, Upazila Agriculture Officer of Sadar; Kutub Uddin, Deputy Director of Jhilanja Horticulture Centre; Shaon Dev, Assistant Agricultural Officer; Md. Saiful Islam, President of the District Nursery Owners’ Association; and model fruit grower Tarek-ul-Islam.
The fair attracted around 200 participants, including agricultural officers, scientists, farmers, and students from various schools and colleges across the district.
Following the inauguration, local fruit saplings were distributed among the students. A total of 9 stalls have been set up, showcasing a wide range of indigenous fruits grown in the region.
The fair will continue until Saturday (June 21), offering visitors a flavorful and educational experience centered on Bangladesh’s rich fruit diversity.
