Mohammad Abu Kasem, now 75, has been in the firewood business before the independence. Starting at the age of 15, he has witnessed the decline of his trade over the years. He said that in the past, he used to sell 300-400 maunds of firewood daily, but today, barely 3-4 maunds are sold on average. Massive use of LPG and other gas stoves have largely replaced the need for firewood.
