A unique weekly pet market held every Friday after Jumu’ah prayers has become an attractive gathering point in Cox’s Bazar.

The market sits on the pavement beside the municipal area, where a wide variety of animals and birds—including fancy pigeons, rabbits, different species of pet birds, and even eagles—are put up for sale.

As soon as prayers conclude, the market comes alive. Sellers from different areas arrive with their collections, while buyers crowd in to purchase their preferred pets.

The presence of young people and hobbyist animal lovers is particularly noticeable.

Pigeon seller Amir Hossain said, “Every Friday we see excellent sales here. I bring different breeds of pigeons, and the demand from buyers is quite high.”

Buyer Amir Ahmed said, “I buy birds and pigeons as a hobby. This market offers a wide range of animals in one place, so I try to visit every Friday.”

According to locals, the market is not just a place for buying and selling but has also turned into a social gathering space. People come here to learn about different animals and exchange experiences.

However, concerned stakeholders say that stronger regulation and better safety measures are needed to ensure animal welfare and maintain a healthy environment.
