An unusual sight at Baharchara market in Cox’s Bazar has been drawing crowds — giant tilapia fish, each weighing around two kilograms.
The hefty catch has quickly become the center of attraction among buyers and fish enthusiasts.
Local fish farmers say this year’s yield has been exceptional thanks to modern aquaculture techniques and regular care.
The improved farming methods have led to larger, healthier fish compared to previous years.
Market sources said the large tilapia are selling for Tk 300–400 per kilogram, depending on size and quality.
The oversized fish have sparked high demand, with many buyers choosing them for family meals or special gatherings.
“Tilapia never used to grow this big before,” said Md. Selim, a fish vendor at the market. “Some farmers used high-quality feed this time, which increased the fish’s weight. They sell out as soon as they arrive.”
The giant tilapia has also become a new favorite for barbecue lovers.
Vendors said local restaurants are now sourcing the larger fish to serve as a fresh attraction on their barbecue menus.
