A housewife in Cox’s Bazar’s Ramu Upazila has set an example of agricultural success by cultivating betel leaf on leased farmland.

Sultana Begum, a resident of the Pechar Dwip Jadughar area, started betel leaf farming on five gonda of leased agricultural land and has already achieved encouraging results through dedication and careful management.

According to local sources, she has placed special emphasis on the regular maintenance of her betel leaf garden from the very beginning. She spends much of her day at the plantation, personally overseeing plant care, weeding and other essential maintenance activities.

“Proper and regular care is crucial for success in betel leaf cultivation.” “Good management leads to better yields,” Sultana Begum said.

A visit to her plantation showed healthy vines with an abundant supply of leaves, indicating a promising harvest. She said she had already sold a considerable quantity of betel leaves and earned a satisfactory income from the venture.

‘So far, I have sold betel leaves worth a significant amount. If the weather remains favourable, I expect production and sales to increase further in the coming months,’ she said.

Local residents believe Sultana Begum’s achievement will encourage other women and small-scale farmers in the area to take up betel leaf cultivation as a source of income.

Agriculture-related officials and farmers said that betel leaf cultivation could be a profitable venture even on a small piece of land when supported by proper care, commitment and hard work.
