Known locally as the ‘gold’ of Teknaf and Ukhiya, betel nuts are now being traded in large quantities despite the ongoing wet betel nut season. Traders are loading sacks of raw betel nuts onto trucks for shipment to different districts. Garden owner Samad Hossain said many growers are selling early in hopes of securing better prices, while trader Zahir Alam said a shortage of raw betel nuts has pushed up prices.
